Day 23 - Camp Dawson, West Virginia to Dayton, Ohio

Today at Camp Dawson - a very remote area right next to the Stateline to Maryland - we woke up in deep, deep fog, we went to breakfast in sunshine, we left in a heavy thunderstorm with lightnings. We left this place in a fast pace moving westward. We crossed the Ohio River west of Parkersburg into Ohio. Before we arrived in Dayton we drove about each street in Enon to find two houses where the two families (Bill and Sid) lived. Quite a challenge without knowing the addresses of places they lived more than 40 years ago. A phone call to our friend helped us finding the places of the past.

Day 22 - Chambersburg, Pennsylvania to Camp Dawson, West Virginia

We left Chambersburg in southern Pennsylvania and headed south through a small corridor in Maryland and further into another small corridor of West Virginia until we reached Virginia again and drove further south to Shenandoah National Park. Shenandoah - daughter of the stars - a mountain range of more than 100 miles from north to south with a skyline drive all the way on top of the range, has breathtaking views towards the west as well as towards the eastern side. Luckily all along the road a railing of stones which made it very comfortable to drive and enjoy the views.
From Shenandoah we went west back into Virginia and drove minor roads - again. Roads as narrow as can be. One comment from my "driver" - "this seems to be as rural West Virginia as it can get".
Before we came to our final destination for today, Camp Dawson, we visited Black Falls State Park, just about 50 miles south of the Camp with a beautiful waterfall. I had to hike down 246 steps to get to the bottom of the falls. Good that the hike was down first and up later, don't know if I had done it otherwise. I need more exercise - smile.

Day 21 - Andrews, Maryland to Chambersburg, Pennsylvania

We left Andrews, but not before we had seen - not played - the three golf courses and not before we had seen one of the official planes (this one on display). We went back through D.C. towards Arlington, Virginia and then north back into Philadelphia, to Gettysburg. This was a day of history and thinking of those who lost their lives for the country.

Day 20, Bordentown, New Jersey to Andrews, Maryland

Could we have left Philadelphia without seeing my great friend "Nasty Nick"? No we couldn't. It was great seeing my wonderful friend again after 10 years.
But too soon it was time to say good bye and we moved south into Delaware through Wilmington and then further south into Maryland. We crossed the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and peaked into the Naval Academy and then explored several places in D.C. We went to the Lincoln Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the Capitol. Our day ended at Andrews, another amazing place.

Day 19 - Danbury, Connecticut to Bordentown, New Jersey

Coming from Danbury we drove west towards New York State and crossed the Hudson River at Fort Montgomery. Somehow we got lost around this Fort. Neither "Hermie" our navigation system, nor Squeeky, our car, nor either one of us had any idea where we were going. We seemed to drive in circles around the Fort. At one point we stopped the car and navigated through maps until we found our way back on track and helped "Hermie" to find the route into New Jersey. This is the result of our driving on minor roads instead of taking freeways. Then we drove through Princeton, which we both thought is in New York State, but it has Princeton University, guess this is the well known University? Early afternoon we arrived in Bordentown, New Jersey, east of Philadelphia.
At the end of the day we visited Pat and her family in Levittown, PA

Day 18 - Cape Cod to Danbury, Connecticut

We had to say good bye to Cape Cod, a beautiful Peninsula, and went south towards Newport, Rhode Island. From Newport we moved across Conanicut Island, but took a short stop at the harbor of Wakefield before we headed west towards Connecticut. On the road going west we saw a sign to the Naval Submarie Base New London, Connecticut with a Sub Museum. This was something we wanted to see. Off the freeway we went towards the museum. I guess it was our "Lucky Day", today is Tuesday and on Tuesdays the Museum is closed. But we managed to look across a fence and saw two subs sitting on shore and in the water.

Day 17 - A Day on Cape Cod, Massachussetts

Another round of Golf today at Falcon Golf Course in the morning, the afternoon we dedicated to discovering the Peninsula. We started at Hyannis Point and then drove to the far end of Cape Cod, to Provincetown.
